Baclofen & Us

Still with me?

Fantastic.

So, we have seen that

Baclofen is an agonist analogue of GABA, acting as an inhibitor of the central nervous system and reducing muscle tone. It is a long established, very safe medicine that does exactly what it is meant to do, and without generating any significant dependence or tolerance in its takers, and with very few significant side effects. It does interact with a few other medicines, but with few dangerous side effects. Further, there are very few people for whom it would not be entirely safe to take it.

The difference is that the use of Baclofen for chronic alcoholism is just a little bit different.

Why?

  • its use in chronic alcoholism is not established;
  • its use in chronic alcoholism is based upon pretty scant evidence; although that evidence is extremely convincing;
  • most 'patients' are probably self-prescribing; therefore the efficacy and side effects are not being recorded;
  • most of the medical profession have either not heard of it, are indifferent to it anyway, or think that it is rubbish;
  • and, perhaps most importantly, the doses required are significantly greater than those used for almost all of its 'normal' uses. Often, very significantly greater.

Consequently, anyone considering taking Baclofen to help them with their chronic alcoholism should be aware of all of these factors.

So long as you do not have any contra-indications to taking Baclofen, or are not taking any medicines with which it might significantly interact, you should be fine.

After all, it didn't put me off !

But it is important that we all keep in touch, and pool our experiences.

You simply MUST use this site and add to it in any and every way you can. If this site has helped you at all, then I am delighted. Just think how much better it would be with your own knowledge and experience added to it as well.

Now, having decided that Baclofen is where you want to go, you need to get it.

And how do you do that?

The very best way is through your own physician with his agreement, his prescriptions, his follow-up and his monitoring.

Unfortunately, this is somewhat of a rarity.

Most of us have to 'self-prescribe' to get Baclofen. This means we act like patient, physician, pharmacist and physician again all in one go.

You must understand this.

A word of caution about self-prescribing

Self-prescribing can never be recommended. I have had problems with it, and I'm an experienced surgeon. There is a lot of very poor quality medicine out there on the internet. Indeed, in the UK at the moment, there is a TV ad warning of rat poison being used in many on-line prescriptions. The advert has a man vomiting a full-sized dead rat. Lovely! Further, the prices can vary considerably. I have looked around for ages, and I know that many of you have too. Eventually, I came across the in-house pharmacy. Their service has proved to be fast and reliable, and their Baclofen is very well priced. I do not intend to endorse or recommend any particular supplier. I have not looked at them all, and it would be quite improper. This site is not a Which Guide to on-line pharmacies. However, all I can do is provide you with the best information that I currently have. Some visitors to this site might just be thinking about taking Baclofen, and not have a clue where to start procurring it. As ever, if you know of something better, please let me know.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, how do people like us actually do high-dose Baclofen?
